Holistic Vision Care

An integral part of our approach to vision

Vision therapy is an integral part of our holistic approach to vision at SpecialEyes Newcastle.

Our vision therapy programs are unique. In partnership with each patient, we develop a program which incorporates their goals for their vision abilities.

Vision therapy requires equal doses of hard work and dedication, which means everyone being on the same page.

What is Vision Therapy (VT)?

Vision Therapy is often described as “physical therapy for the eyes, brain, and body.” It is an active, engaging, evidence-based clinical treatment program designed to strengthen and improve the connection between your eyes and your central nervous system.

Rather than simply treating surface symptoms, Vision Therapy utilises neuroplasticity to build new visual pathways through repetition and conscious awareness. This helps patients develop comfortable, efficient, and coordinated vision in real-world environments.

Who Can Benefit from Vision Therapy?

Children Experiencing Learning Difficulties

Children struggling with reading fluency and comprehension, writing, distractibility or concentration. VT improves visual control and efficiency to support eye tracking, focusing, or eye teaming challenges that may be mistaken for behavioural or attention concerns. Activities are included in our VT programs to address visual information processing which is how the brain receives, understands and uses what the eyes see.

Patients Experiencing Visual Discomfort

Individuals suffering from headaches, eye strain, blurred vision, losing their place while reading, skipping words, tracking difficulties, fatigue, motion sensitivity, or discomfort on screens.

Athletes and Adults Seeking Performance Enhancement

High-performance individuals looking to improve balance, reaction time, coordination, spatial awareness, visual-motor integration (VMI), depth perception, body awareness, and visual timing under pressure. You cant hit or kick what you cant see??

Neurological Recovery Patients

Individuals seeking rehabilitation for visual deficits or post-concussion visual symptoms resulting from illnesses or injuries such as stroke, acquired and/or traumatic brain injuries, head injuries, whiplash, or Parkinson’s Disease.

How Vision Therapy Works

Every program begins with a comprehensive Behavioural & Neuro-Developmental Vision Assessment, typically taking 45–60 minutes. Following the initial consultation any required pre-testing will occur to gather essential baseline information. This may include Right-Eye tracking assessment, Functional Syntonic Phototherapy field evaluation, VIP (Visual Information Processing) assessment. Together, these assessments evaluate spatial awareness, posture, motor development, visual processing, and functional performance to uncover the underlying causes of your difficulties, allowing us to develop a personalised treatment program tailored to your specific needs.

If Vision Therapy is appropriate, we design an individualised treatment plan tailored to your specific goals. Programs typically involve a combination of:

  • In-office therapy sessions with our accredited therapists.
  • Home-based activities and exercises.
  • Specialised lenses, prisms, neural filters, or specialised equipment when appropriate.
  • Active tasks that integrate vision, movement, balance, coordination, and visual processing.

Conditions and Benefits

Vision Therapy can support and treat conditions such as:

  • Convergence insufficiency and Double vision
  • Eye tracking, focusing, and visual processing challenges
  • Reading-related visual difficulties, headaches, and visual fatigue
  • Lazy eye (Amblyopia) and Turned eye/s (Strabismus)
  • Post-concussion visual symptoms or coordination difficulties

By making the visual system more efficient, patients often experience improved reading fluency, neater writing, better attention and concentration, increased confidence in the classroom, reduced headaches, enhanced sporting performance, and greater visual comfort during screen use.

What Do Programs Do?

Enhancing and developing visual abilities

Vision therapy provides the opportunity for visual abilities to be enhanced and developed through a range of therapies.

  • Multi-sensory programs to integrate vision with gross and fine motor skills, speech and hearing, rhythm and timing.
  • Using specific lenses or prisms to improve vision.
  • Home-based programs for children, with supervision by a parent or carer.
Therapy Components

A program tailored to each patient’s goals

At Specialeyes Newcastle, each vision therapy program is developed in partnership with the patient and is based on their individual visual abilities and goals.

Multi-sensory activities

Integrating vision with movement, timing, rhythm, speech and hearing.

Lenses and prisms

Using specific optical tools where appropriate to support vision.

Home practice

Supporting children with parent or carer supervised practice.

Time Commitment

One-on-one sessions plus home practice

The time commitment varies depending on the level of visual abilities of each patient.

Our in-practice vision therapy sessions are one-on-one for 45 minutes over a 10-week period.

Like any new set of skills, practice makes perfect. Home practice of 20–30 minutes, 5 days a week, is best practice, with a parent or carer supervising.
